Lavishing Lebanese
by Dave Quintana - Servants of the Word
Lebanon is one of my favourite places. While it is hard to outdo it for physical beauty, what I really love in Lebanon are the people and the culture. I think that what I most have learned from the Lebanese is the proper way to receive guests. Not even so much in terms of putting on a fine meal as you receive guests (and let me tell you, no one can outdo the Lebanese when it comes to fine meals and receiving guests!), but more in terms of how they drop everything else they are doing in order to attend to your every need (or even to attend to some needs you don't have!). They don't just meet your basic needs; day after day, they lavish love and hospitality upon you. And they don't stop till you're "enfazeret" (that's Arabic for "filled to exploding"!). Their ability to orient their life around others is truly impressive, and something that I hope that I am able to emulate just a bit.
Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; love one another with brotherly affection; outdo one another in showing honor. Never flag in zeal, be aglow with the Spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in your hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints, practice hospitality. Rom 12:9-13 RSV
