Peace With the Past

by Dave Quintana - Servants of the Word

I find Winston Churchill a delightfully colourful character (don't worry—as tempting as it is, I won't spend this entire meditation noting some of his interactions with Lady Ascot!). He was a man who could take a stand. He was a man who could fall and get back up again. He was a man who could press on in the face of great adversity. I love this Churchill quote, "if the present makes war with the past, the future will be lost". It is so easy to get caught up in all the bad things that have happened to us, or all the bad things that are happening around us. We need to deal with the past of course, but then we need to move on. Immersing ourselves in the past merely wastes the present and jeopardizes the future. May the Lord grant us the freedom to make peace with the past and lean into all that He has for us in the future.

Five times I have received at the hands of the Jews the forty lashes less one. Three times I have been beaten with rods; once I was stoned. Three times I have been shipwrecked; a night and a day I have been adrift at sea; on frequent journeys, in danger from rivers, danger from robbers, danger from my own people, danger from Gentiles, danger in the city, danger in the wilderness, danger at sea, danger from false brethren; in toil and hardship, through many a sleepless night, in hunger and thirst, often without food, in cold and exposure. And, apart from other things, there is the daily pressure upon me of my anxiety for all the churches. 2Cor 11:24-28 RSV
