Don't Hew Other Cisterns

by Dave Quintana - Servants of the Word

I have always found this verse in Jeremiah a convicting one—"forsaking the Lord, the fountain of living waters" and "hewing out cisterns" for myself. Then he adds the further clarifying and condemning point that they are broken, and can hold no water! Of what use is that? How easy it is I find, to seek life in other places, and to "make my own way". And yet how foolish it is, and how condemned to failure from the beginning it is. Perhaps this Lord's Day we can gain some insight into where in our lives we might have hewed out cisterns for ourselves and forsaken (or neglected) the fountain of living water.

For my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, and hewed out cisterns for themselves, broken cisterns that can hold no water. Jer 2:13 NIV
