is something special. When I say “Detroit,” I am not just talking about
a city, I am talking about an experience. There is something here that
I can’t get across in this simple testimony, but I can at least share a
few things that the Lord has done in my life since I’ve been in Detroit.
When I came
here for an alternative spring break Urban
Encounter trip in the spring, the Lord gave me this profound peace.
I normally have a hard time adjusting to new people and new places, but
not here. It just felt right to be here, like I was in my proper place.
When I returned to school I was completely let down because I felt like
everything I did at school was empty, whereas everything in Detroit was
so full of purpose. Needless to say, I needed to get back to Detroit.
When I came
back this summer, God blessed me even more than the first time. He blessed
me with less peace and more struggles, and chances to grow. In the past,
I have submitted to trials and made excuses for my lack of faith or trust
in the Lord, but here in Detroit there are no excuses. It is a place that
so obviously needs help that it doesn’t matter whether you’re the “right
person for the job.” It matters that you are the one God put here.
You’re God’s person for the job. So, whether I feel qualified, adequate,
or happy about what I am doing in Detroit, I know that the Lord wants me
to act. And if it is what the Lord wants, it will be successful. Detroit
forces people to act in faith and that is something that has changed the
way I live my life.
Like I said
before, Detroit is an experience that can’t be taken from a page. If you
truly want to understand what Detroit is all about, you need to experience
it for yourself. There is something here for you.
